Why Is My Jet Ski Losing Top Speed?

You've got the throttle pinned, the engine sounds healthy, but your jet ski just isn't reaching the speed it used to.

Loss of top speed is one of the most common complaints among jet ski owners. The good news is that the cause is often something relatively simple rather than a major engine problem.

Here are the most common reasons your Sea-Doo, Yamaha or Kawasaki may be slowing down.

1. Damaged Impeller

Your impeller is the heart of the jet pump.

Even minor damage from rocks, shells or debris can reduce efficiency and cause significant performance loss.

Common symptoms include:

  • Reduced top speed

  • Slower acceleration

  • Increased RPM without increased speed

  • Cavitation during take-off

Inspect the blades carefully. Even small chips can make a noticeable difference.

2. Worn Wear Ring

The wear ring works alongside the impeller to create efficient water flow.

Over time the clearance between the impeller and wear ring increases, reducing thrust and performance.

Signs of a worn wear ring include:

  • Poor hole-shot performance

  • Cavitation

  • Reduced speed

  • Higher fuel consumption

Replacing a wear ring is often one of the most cost-effective performance improvements you can make.

3. Dirty Spark Plugs

Spark plugs are frequently overlooked.

Old or fouled plugs can cause incomplete combustion, reducing engine power and fuel efficiency.

If your ski is due for a service, replacing the spark plugs is a simple maintenance item that can restore lost performance.

4. Blocked Fuel Filter

Modern fuel systems rely on consistent fuel pressure.

A partially blocked fuel filter can starve the engine at high RPM, preventing it from producing maximum power.

Symptoms may include:

  • Engine hesitation

  • Loss of top speed

  • Poor throttle response

Regular filter replacement can prevent more serious fuel system issues.

5. Intercooler Problems

On supercharged models, the intercooler plays a critical role in performance.

Corrosion, leaks or blockages can reduce cooling efficiency, causing the engine to pull timing and lose power.

Common symptoms include:

  • Reduced boost performance

  • Higher intake temperatures

  • Lower top speed

Regular inspection is particularly important for saltwater riders.

6. Excess Weight

It sounds obvious, but many skis are carrying far more weight than intended.

Additional fuel, equipment, accessories and passengers all affect performance.

Removing unnecessary gear can sometimes recover several kilometres per hour.

7. Hull Damage Or Build-Up

Marine growth, heavy staining and damaged hull surfaces create drag.

Even a small amount of growth can significantly impact top speed.

Keep your hull clean and inspect it regularly for damage.

When To Check The Jet Pump First

If your engine revs normally but speed is down, the jet pump is usually the first place to investigate.

The impeller and wear ring account for a large percentage of performance-related issues and are often much cheaper to repair than engine problems.
