Kawasaki Ultra 250X vs Ultra 260X: What's Different?

The Kawasaki Ultra 250X and Ultra 260X look extremely similar—and that's because underneath, they're closely related.

The Ultra 250X launched Kawasaki into the supercharged four-stroke performance era, while the Ultra 260X arrived for 2009 as its updated replacement.

But Kawasaki didn't simply add another 10 horsepower and change the decals.

The basic recipe remained the same: a large, stable Ultra hull powered by Kawasaki's supercharged 1498cc four-cylinder engine.

The important differences are inside.


1. The Ultra 260X Makes More Power

The obvious difference is in the names.

An extra 10 horsepower doesn't sound enormous, but Kawasaki made several mechanical changes to achieve it.

The 260X wasn't simply an ECU tune.


2. Higher Compression Ratio

One of the biggest internal changes was compression ratio.

The Ultra 250X uses approximately:

7.8:1

The Ultra 260X increased this to:

8.4:1

Kawasaki achieved this partly through revised pistons.

The higher compression ratio contributed to the 260X's additional performance.


3. Revised Pistons

The 260X received updated pistons rather than simply carrying over the complete 250X configuration.

This is particularly important when ordering engine rebuild parts.

Don't assume that because both engines are 1498cc supercharged Kawasaki four-cylinders that every internal component is identical.

In real-world riding, the condition of the ski can make a bigger difference than the badge.

A healthy stock 250X with:

  • Healthy supercharger

  • Correct impeller

  • Good jet pump

  • Clean fuel system

may perform considerably better than a poorly maintained 260X.


What About The Supercharger?

Both models use a supercharged and intercooled version of Kawasaki's 1498cc four-cylinder engine.

The supercharger system should be carefully inspected on either model.

Check for:

  • Unusual supercharger noise

  • Bearing noise

  • Boost leaks

  • Damaged hoses

  • Loose clamps

  • Corrosion
